Tune In!
Did you know?
February 2009 is the deadline for the television industry to switch from broadcasting in analog format to digital. It is anticipated that this change will create an enormous wave of e-waste as up to 80 million televisions become obsolete. Click here for more details on televisions that will be impacted by this change. Televisions, like computers, are composed of hazardous chemicals. Also, be sure to read The SVTC T.V. Fact Sheet for more information regarding the analog to digital switchover.
Join us in holding the electronics companies accountable for their e-waste.
Part of the problem. In 2005 approximately 2.05 million tons of electronic waste was generated in the U.S., but only 17-18 percent of that was collected for recycling. E-waste that isn't responsibly recycled finds its way into landfills, is exported or is dismantled by prison labor.
We want you to get involved! TV manufacturers need to hear from you! They need to hear that it is important for them to work towards eliminating hazardous chemicals from their TVs, to take back their used products and to responsibly recycle them without exporting to countries that lack the resources to handle e-waste or using prison labor.
Here is how you can help! Please call or email the manufacturer of your television and ask if they have a program to take back broken or old televisions and if they recycle responsibly.
Here's and idea of what they need to hear.
"Hi. I have a ___________ TV, and I was wondering if you have a take-back and recycling program for old TVs?"
"I would like to encourage ____________ to take back its used products and recycle them without exporting or using prison labor and to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the new TVs you are making." |
